The Old Hundred Mining Company was
organized in 1904 with much hoopla, fanfare and local media
coverage. Howell Hinds, Cleveland promoter and president of the
company, was the driving force who put the initial lease option
package on the Midland Mining Company's claims together and who
obtained the capital needed for such a large undertaking. No
evidence suggests that the new-formed company did any prior
sampling or exploration before leasing the property, a common
mistake that was to have far-reaching consequences.
Regardless of the financiers, the company
began an impressive development program that included a large 40
stamp mill with a capacity of 125 to 200 tons per day built by
the American Bridge Company at the staggering cost of $450,000.
