The San
Juan Triangle
and Silverton is the northern part of San Juan County with borders with
Ouray, Hinsdale, San Miguel counties. The southern boundary is a little
south of Silverton. The area covers the main mining district with mines
beyond San Juan into Ouray, Hinsdale and San Miguel counties, named San
Juan Triangle about 1906, and is
one of or the
largest outdoor
compact historical mining areas
(museum)
in the USA and probably the most
completely detailed documented mining areas with about 600 photographed mine sites . San Juan
Triangle (SJT) is accessed by county roads CR 2, CR 3, CR 4, CR 5, US 110, CR
51, CR 52, CR 53, CR 35, CR 61, CR 9, CR 19, CR 11, CR 17 and US 550. The SJT has
over 600 mine sites, several buildings in various states of stability,
long gone mill sites, numerous mining artifacts, Animas Forks ghost
town, Sound Democrat Mill, Placer Boarding House, Eureka site & camp ground,
Sunnyside mines/mill, Gold Prince mine site, Frisco mill/mine, Buffalo
Boy mine/tram, Big Giant mine/mill/tram, Mayflower mine/mill/tram, numerous mountain vistas, mining mill and mine tours.
Also great for hiking, camping, vehicle rentals,
jeep, OHV, the old west mining, tours, skiing, snowmobiles.
BLM visitor estimates 400,000/year or 2666 daily visits/season.
NOW recognized as a popular tourist attraction.
"The high alpine region in south-central Colorado has seen an increase
in tourism and impacts from the increase in travelers." "This consortium
of counties desires to provide additional restroom facilities for the
increased impacts of travelers,"
Increased tourism
"Around
1900 (125 years ago) the San Juan Triangle was a busy mining commerce
with 1000s of people, small towns, 100s of working mines, many large mills and
mining operations, railroads, tramways. SJT was a top gold producer in
the USA. Today, still remnants of mining
past with tailings, adits, shafts, standing buildings, building and
town sites, tramways, artifacts. San Juan Triangle is an outdoor museum of the
mining past on the original mining roads. Most mines were sold
several times for unpaid bills. Probably as much legal activity as there
was hard rock activity, work the mine, don't pay the bills.
Silverton
In 1874,
Silverton's town site was established, quickly becoming the hub of
numerous mining camps. Alongside miners, the town attracted the
attention of a Denver railroad company. In July 1882, the inaugural
train from Durango, operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,
arrived in Silverton. By 1883, Silverton boasted a population of 2,000,
featuring 400 buildings, including 2 banks, 5 laundries, 29 saloons,
hotels, and the notorious red-light district, Blair Street.
From 1874, families
began relocating to Silverton, prompting efforts to maintain
respectability within the town. An imaginary line down Greene Street
symbolized the division between law-abiding residents and the
establishments associated with gambling, prostitution, and
entertainment.
In May 1883, a grand
jury indicted 117 "lewd women" on Notorious Blair Street. While fines
were imposed, gambling and prostitution were somewhat tolerated as long
as they remained confined to certain areas. Such lascivious behavior was
not necessarily condemned, as fines were readily used for the growing
community.

A review of the
100s of historical photos shows the great loss of buildings and mining
artifacts at the San Juan Triangle. The San Juan Triangle
Project is
reversing that loss . The San Juan
Triangle as an Outdoor
Historical Mining Museum
does create some issues.
FURTHER RESEARCH
Many sites have both ground or drone and 3D satellite. Database (xls or PDF) for multiple sites same name has
data line for each, same site with multiple names has data line for
each, available data line for each site by name or each name for same
site. Find site by name, GPS, site code. From
Superfund Final Report May 2018, some mine sites with over 100 HQ (red)
in near water have no water from mine or tailings or any recent water
in the area. Note on location - some claimed mine
sites have no clear visible site are database marked No Satellite or
NOTHING, on
map a small dot, have
no photo, valid site unknown. Institution search coding
suggestions for public.
The map includes the previous location of about 100 aerial trams.
A note-
"Little Maud Mine", which one, there are three. SJTP uses SJTP code to
identify, unique to GPS location.
The SJT project map and
data is also available to the BLM estimate of well over 400,000 people
per year. .

A big problem at
the San Juan Triangle people putting trash in
the toilets. Non human trash means the toilet cannot be pumped
and will be closed like the toilets at Eureka and Corkscrew.
Using the toilet
as a dumpster or RV waste means NO TOILET
. Take
your trash with you. Also toilets are NOT to be used to dispose
of sanitary waste from RVs or trailers. That waste needs to be
brought to one of the several RV dump stations in the area.

RESEARCH ON
HEAVY METAL
COMPOUNDS IN MINE
TAILINGS AS A HEALTH RISK
|
|
No
small mine tailings airborne
risk to humans
was found |
|
RESEARCH GOAL |
|
The
goal is to find clear scientific
empirical documentation data
that mine tailings by aerial
(air & dust) cause harm to
humans or do not cause harm.
Heavy metals in water from mine
tailings is well documented and
is handled by multiple agencies,
not part of this study. Also
large open pit mines with large
tailings is also not part
of this study. This study is
small underground local mining.
Mine tailings by ingestion
(eating mine tailings) is not
recommended except by your
doctor.
|
|
PRELIMINARY REPORT
This is a preliminary
report being adjusted based on
new information and comments.
|
|
GOAL To stop unnecessary damage
to historical mine tailings, for
the benefit of all.
No airborne human health risk
from small mine tailings.
To date the San Juan Triangle
Project (SJTP) has found no
public verified empirical data
showing movement of hazardous
chemicals compounds or molecules by airborne,
air, dust or contact from small mine
tailings to humans. Empirical
data needed is: size,
concentration and
composition of airborne dust,
reason for dust, location,
exposure date,
effect on humans (illness), how many
humans tested and age, size of
tailings, distance airborne to
humans, verification illness
came from tailings not other
source.
The comments here are the
opinions of the San Juan
Triangle Project based on the
information listed below which
is the work of others which may
or may not be true so our
assessment may or may not be
true over time. SJTP is looking
for solid scientific empirical
data to prove or disprove any
assumed risk to humans. To date
no such data has been found. The
lack of empirical data indicates
to SJTP that there is no
airborne risk to humans, however
if such verified data is found,
that assumption may change and
will be noted here .
It is well empirical documented
that heavy metals and compounds
that are hazardous to humans
exist in mine tailings. It is
also well documented that the
same chemicals and metals are a
hazard to humans when in contact
with humans and may or may not
accumulate in the body over
time. Heavy metals in
water from mine tailings is well
documented and is handled by
multiple agencies with data and
proof, not part of this study.
Mine tailings vs. water issues
information is available on this
web site under "EPA
ACTIVITIES". This study does
not apply to large open pit
mining and tailings. Also eating
contaminated animals or plants
from mine tailings is
essentially zero (not
documented), and children
playing on mine tailings is not
part of this study. In addition most
San Juan tailings are
unprocessed rock chunks directly from
the mines.
SJTP
has found no evidence in the
listed studies of mine tailings
referencing the same metals,
chemical molecules or compounds moving by
air (airborne and breathing),
ingestion (dust or eating), skin
contact or other contacts
to humans from mine tailings of
the tailings size at San Juan
County to cause immediate or
long term health issues (bioavailable). However there may be
other undocumented movements of
metals/chemicals to humans
that may be found in the future.
It is noted that at this time
that SJTP has found no public
reports of illness or issues
related to such movements of mine
chemicals. Based on no public
data or illness or issues, it is
unlikely such other movements
will be found.
The
assumption that adult humans near
small mine tailings are in
health danger because of airborne or
contact to heavy
metals, chemicals, molecules or
compounds is not supported by any
public empirical data at
multiple sources from our
research. In fact there
is a report that there is no risk
to humans. This study does not
say it never happened but if it
did cause harm the risk is
extremely low
and we have found no data as to what
may have caused harm or what the
harm was. Any issues would
generate much data. Logic says not a good
idea to play on or purposely
cause dust and disturb tailings. If left
alone in the historical state to enjoy history, there
is no risk. Repeated
exposure to non toxic dust
(airborne) is
clearly documented in other
reports, not healthy
with multiple issues and not
part of this study. Before
any action is taken based on an
assumption that there is a
health risk
to humans as listed in this
study from undisturbed mine
tailings of the size noted here,
a verified scientific empirical study
as listed above should be conducted and made
available to the public
to verify your actions prior to
such actions. SJTP
Reclamation ratings below If anyone has verified
data on airborne heavy metals
causing harm to humans from mine
tailings size under 200,000 sq
ft, please contact SJTP at this
web site.
SJTP welcomes any new
information or request for the
latest information and data on this web
site.
SJTP
also welcomes comments and
disagreements.
